Types of Home Insulation

OJ Insulation can install insulation throughout any area of your household. Whether it be walls, attics, crawl spaces, ceilings or garages, we’re equipped to securely install insulation no matter what.

Our home insulation contractors also offer different forms of insulation depending on your situation. The types of insulation we offer include:

  • Fiberglass. One of the most popular forms of insulation, fiberglass is mainly composed of recycled materials and can help lower your energy costs.
  • Cellulose. Known for being environmentally friendly, cellulose is a loose fill insulation that can help reduce noise!
  • Radiant barrier. Also sometimes called foil or reflective insulation, radiant barrier is a great choice for making homes feel more comfortable during the warmer times of year.
  • Batt. A type of fiberglass insulation, batts are pre-cut panels that can be neatly applied to your attics, ceiling, walls and more.
  • Blown-in. This form of fiberglass insulation is different from batts as it can be freely distributed throughout an area, filling hard-to-reach areas or oddly shaped spaces.

We also offer insulation inspections, estimates and removal services. Whatever your needs may be, our experts are here to provide insulation services in Los Angeles, San Diego and surrounding areas. Contact us online or call (800) 707-9278.

Re-Insulating Your Home in San Diego, Los Angeles & Surrounding Areas

We believe insulation is one of the best investments you can make for your home—it’s a great way to gain significant long-term savings and make your home more comfortable year-round. But how can you tell if you need more insulation? There are several signs:

  • Energy bills that are higher than normal
  • Drafts (particularly near the windows and doors)
  • Uneven temperatures from room to room
  • Air conditioner running more than normal

An insulation company like OJ Insulation will be able to tell you whether you need more insulation, but those are some signs you can look out for on your own.

Benefits of Home Insulation

Although installing more insulation in your home may seem like a lot of money upfront, it can pay for itself in the long run and can help maximize the energy efficiency of your home. In addition to saving energy (and money), insulation can:

  • Help make your home more comfortable year in and year out
  • Help improve the energy efficiency of your air conditioner
  • Work to reduce outside noises and noises between different levels and rooms inside
  • Help protect against air and water infiltration
  • Help promote a healthier environment (decreased energy consumption leads to fewer greenhouse gas emissions)

Frequently Asked Questions About Home Insulation

What does R-value mean?

The R-value of insulation represents its resistance to the flow of heat. Heat naturally travels from warm to cool areas, attempting to reach equilibrium. Insulation slows this process. In the winter, proper insulation slows heat loss to the outside air. In the summer, insulation increases the time needed for heat to migrate from the outside to the inside of your home. The R-value of an insulation can be affected by moisture, compression, temperature and other factors.

Can I add more insulation on top of what I already have?

It varies by type of insulation, but in general, as long as your existing insulation is not wet or damaged, it is likely okay to add additional insulation over what is currently there. Blown-in cellulose or fiberglass can be applied over nearly any insulation, as can fiberglass batts. If you already have a layer of fiberglass batts, install the new layer perpendicular to the first to seal the seams. Do not add insulation with a vapor barrier or kraft facing, as this may trap moisture between layers. If your current insulation is damaged or under-performing, or if it contains harmful materials like asbestos, it should be safely removed before installing all-new insulation. Consult our professionals at OJ Insulation to learn the best way to add more insulation to your California home.

Is it possible to have too much insulation?

Adding insulation to a home is usually a good thing, as many homes in Southern California lack the recommended amounts, and adding more can greatly reduce energy costs. Going beyond the recommended amounts may not be cost-effective, however, as the first layers will do most of the work, and too much insulation can actually trap air pollutants and moisture in your home. For Southern California, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends up to R-60 in the attic, R-21 in walls and R-25 in floors and crawl spaces. Above that, the potential problems and minimal additional savings may not be worth the cost.

How long can insulation last?

Blown-in fiberglass, cellulose, mineral wool or spray foam can last multiple decades or even the lifetime of the home. Fiberglass batts can last 15 to 20 years before the insulation starts falling off the facing, though its insulation value does not change unless it becomes wet or damaged.
