Do you need to re-insulate your home? If so, you need retrofit insulation solutions. Retrofit insulation is insulation that is installed in an existing home—insulation retrofitting differs from insulating a new home that is being constructed.
Often, the best ways to lower your energy bills and make your home more comfortable are installing retrofit insulation and making sure your home is properly air sealed. In fact, re-insulation can make your home a lot more energy-efficient and help you save you a lot of money!
Retrofit Insulation: Do You Need to Re-Insulate?
First things first—how can you even tell when it’s time for re-insulation? There are a few signs that indicate you need more insulation. You may need retrofit insulation, or existing home insulation, if:
- Your energy bills have been increasing
- It’s drafty and uncomfortable in your house
- Temperatures from room to room aren’t even
- The AC is running more than normal in the summer
These aren’t all the signs, but they are common ones experienced by homeowners. Of course, you can always talk to a professional insulation company.
Existing Home Insulation
You have a number of choices when it comes to the material (or materials) you use for your retrofit insulation job. Essentially, you can use any type of insulation! The type you use will depend on a few factors—like where you need to insulate, etc.—and an insulation company will be able to assess your situation and tell you which type(s) of insulation you need to install, how much you need, and where to install it. Generally, however, retrofit insulation includes everything:
- Fiberglass insulation
- Cellulose insulation
- Radiant barrier insulation
If you need to re-insulate the attic, for example, radiant barrier insulation is a practical solution. It is installed right under the roof to help your home reflect radiant heat from the sun and keep it cooler and more comfortable (and help reduce your energy bills!).
Radiant barrier is a particularly cost-effective and good solution for warmer climates, like Southern California—especially when combined with other types of insulation, such as fiberglass and/or cellulose.
